Rolls Upgrades Lift System For F-35B Operational Debut
Rolls-Royce plans to modify the lift systems on already delivered Lockheed MartinF-35Bs to incorporate changes from flight testing and bring the aircraft up to the configuration required to achieve initial operational capability (IOC) with the U.S. Marine Corps in 2015.
The biggest change is new inlet guide vanes (IGVs) on the shaft-driven lift fan to remove low-temperature operating limitations, says Tom Hartmann, senior vice president for U.S. government programs. Overall, he characterizes the modifications required for IOC as "a number of minor tweaks."
