Defence factory plan for Melbourne

Victoria’s beleaguered manufacturing sector has received a boost with the state to host a $10 million factory making hi-tech defence force equipment.

Wilcox Industries, a US company that makes equipment for soldiers and police, has partnered with Australian supplier Aquaterro to build the factory. Melbourne’s southeast is the likely location.

Wilcox is a key supplier to the US military and the Victorian plant will be its first overseas facility.


Victorian businesses have secured about 70 per cent of contracts awarded in Australia so far under the F-35 Lightning Joint Strike Fighter aircraft program, according to the State Government.
